WP1 Life Extension – Application of new technologies to elderly infrastructure

Activity: RTD
Lead Beneficiary: LTU

The main objective for WP1 is to apply new technologies to extend the life of elderly infrastructure by: exploring and evaluating new technologies to extend the life length; developing new more accurate assessment methods to determine if and when the life can be extended without any interventions; further developing new technologies that can reduce life cycle costs for repair and strengthening and minimize the necessary traffic interruption; developing a guideline for the application of new technologies to extend the life length and transferring existing knowledge of new technologies to Eastern Europe and developing economies. Duration: 36 M

WP2 Degradation and structural models to develop realistic life cycle cost and safety models

Activity: RTD
Lead Beneficiary: Surrey

The main five objectives of WP 2 are to: identify and model important degradation phenomena and processes for selected railway assets for the purpose of LCC and LCA analysis; quantify the influence of intervention strategies on degradation time profiles; develop performance time profiles for selected asset types; identify and model important degradation phenomena and processes for selected railway assets for the purpose of LCC and LCA analysis and validate the developed degradation and performance models through case studies. Duration: 30 M

WP3 Replacement of obsolete infrastructure – New construction methods and logistics

Activity: RTD
Lead Beneficiary: DB

The main three objectives for WP3 are to: investigate new construction methods and logistics for transport that minimize the time and cost required for the replacement of obsolete infrastructure; plan and optimise the construction processes on existing lines where replacement of existing infrastructure is an alternative and deliver input regarding data to the development of life cycle cost models and other decision support systems for infrastructure managers. Duration: 36 M

WP4 Monitoring and examination techniques

Activity: RTD
Lead Beneficiary: MAV

The main objective is to: clarify what inputs the degradation models require from advanced monitoring techniques and examination systems, investigate their use and identify how these can operate in the most cost-effective and reliable way to complement or replace existing examination techniques for elderly infrastructure.Duration: 36 M

WP5 Whole life environmental and economic asset management

Activity: RTD
Lead Beneficiary: NR

The main objective of WP5 is to create a tool (Life Cycle Assessment Tool - LCAT) that can compare different maintenance/replacement strategies for track and infrastructure based on a life cycle evaluation. Duration: 36 M

WP6 Dissemination, training and exploitation

Activity: OTH
Lead Beneficiary: UIC

The main four objectives are to: provide a dedicated website where the result is easy to reach and with knowledge management tools; support exchange of knowledge and skills between the partners’ teams to optimise integration effects and collaboration; support information dissemination to the railways, public, stakeholders and experts from industry and research; prepare relevant dissemination and implementation material with special focus on guidelines. Duration: 36 M

WP7 Project management

Activity: MGT
Lead Beneficiary: UIC

The main two objectives are to: implement and maintain the administrative management infrastructure of the project and provide financial and contractual management of the consortium, including maintenance of the Consortium Agreement. Duration: 36 M

WP8 Scientific and technical coordination

Activity: RTD
Lead Beneficiary: UIC

The main three objectives are to: ensure governance and coordination at project level, the achievement of the project objectives; select the members of the advisory committee, coordinate their action and organize their participation in key meetings and assure the liaison with other projects, e.g. SMART Rail. Duration: 36 M
